As I look back on the last two years of Unlock Foundation’s work, I am amazed at how much we have accomplished and humbled by the great network of supporters we have. I started the organization with a deep interest and affection for Divundu Combined School, the primary school in northern Namibia where I taught English and a community that changed my life. I had seen a spirit in the smiles of the children when they read from a new textbook, wrote with a new pen, and sat in a new desk. A spirit that empowered them to brave long distances and focus with a lack of proper nourishment. This spirit also existed with friends and family back in the United States, as they stepped up to donate, with the simple premise that they could make a significant impact in the lives of these children.
This innate spirit, that all children deserve access to a quality education and the right to go to school, is what pushes Unlock Foundation forward. We recognize that education is a fundamental human right and vital to achieving economic growth, increasing income, sustaining a healthy society, and opening doors of possibilities. While considerable progress has been made, 57 million children remain out of school and the students at our partner schools at Divundu Combined School in Namibia and Old Odunasi School in Ghana face difficult obstacles every day. We are determined to change this.
Since our inception, we have emphasized that that all students are in control of their own destiny, and progress cannot happen without their voices being heard and their ideas pursued. Moving forward, the student government’s at each school will be the change agents to create, develop, and lead Unlock Foundation’s projects. These young role-models will become thoughtful, innovative leaders to address the issues that keep them out of school. From preventable diseases, poor sanitation, and a lack of resources, they will have a direct role in unlocking their potential.
On December 10th, we are asking our friends and our families to join us at our annual Unlock Charity Gala to raise money for the student governments and their new programs and initiatives in 2014. Join us to help revive the spirit the lives in each child and unlock a brighter world. In the end, it is this sense of interconnectedness, this depth of compassion, and this determination to act, that will define our generation.
